What did the people of the lake fortress eat (LV)?
The islanders’ diet was very diverse – cereals, turnips, the meat of hunted and domestic animals, milk, eggs and fish. Vegetable oil was obtained from linseed and the seeds of gold-of-pleasure. The only sweetener was honey, also used to make mead, an alcoholic beverage that remained very popular in the Middle Ages. Cereals were consumed mainly in the form of porridge and flat cakes. Also important was horse meat and mare’s milk. Wild fruits and nuts were also consumed – hazelnuts, acorns, mushrooms and berries, as well as the leaves and shoots of various plants – horsetails, nettles, sorrel, chick-weed and goosefoot.
