Abstract

The focus of this article lies on two topics concerning German "Experimental Archaeology". First the definition of terms used for several activities but not clear fixed in their significance. Second, their use within the reconstructive work on textiles will be analysed. Trials are tests to gain knowledge and experiences in prehistoric and ancient crafts, techniques and technologies. They are a matter of approaching, the testers are looking for answers to their questions by trial and error. Trials say much about tester's abilities and skills, and they can have different scopes from simple and short to complex and long lasting. Reconstructions require to some extent crafts and experiences, knowledge in technical processes and technology and a theoretical basis such as terminology. They have a specific aim depending on what will be done with the object afterwards. Experiments must have specific quality standards to be called "experiments", all above the relevance for archaeology. Experimental archaeology as a method of archaeology contains Reconstructive Archaeology as one of its fields such as parts of Archaeotechnique and Archaeological Education and Demonstration and within them trials, reconstructions and experiments. Reflecting one's own projects from time to time it is necessary to bear all these terms and fields in mind ot find one's place within Experimental Archaeology.
