Abstract

From 18th of June to 18th of October 2009, a large exhibition about the art of the Celts took place at the Historisches Museum Bern. For this occasion a Celtic metal workshop was reconstructed as far as possible and installed in the museum yard. In this workshop, a replica of the bronze couch found in the tumulus of Hochdorf (Germany) was rebuilt under the eyes of the public, that the metal workshop of a Celtic chieftain has been more than a simple smithy but a working center, where the most varied types of metalwork such as forging, casting, sheet metal work and jewelers work were practiced. On the basis of finds made on the Heuneburg, at Sévaz, Manching, Rheinau and other places, the tools and infrastructure of a Celtic metal workshop were reconstructed. With this arrangement the couch was produced. This way, the project also can give a contribution to the controversially discussed question about the place where the couch of Hochdorf is originally coming from.
